Mile Bluff Medical Center receives a $50,000 Helen Bader Foundation Grant Mile Bluff Medical Center has received a two-year, $50,000 grant from the Helen Bader Foundation. The Milwaukee-based foundation is partnering with Mile Bluff to bring hope to families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, by establishing a memory assessment clinic in Juneau County. With the high percentage of residents in the region over the age of 50, the medical center sees a significant number of patients with Alzheimer’s and related dementia diseases. “People who live in rural areas often find it difficult to access specialized healthcare such as an Alzheimer’s diagnostic clinic, without traveling great distances,” commented Mile Bluff’s grant writer Martha Airth-Kindree, “We’re very grateful to the foundation for this opportunity.” Although dementia cannot be cured, its progression can be slowed. Mile Bluff’s memory assessment clinic providers, Dr. Eric Heaney, and nurse practitioner Cris Custer, note: “Early diagnosis is essential to providing support to persons with dementia and to their families; and there is a better chance of benefiting from treatment with early diagnosis. Establishing a memory clinic for our rural residents will provide assessment, education and information, and referrals to local services and support.” There is a need to extend awareness to the community about the disease, so Mile Bluff plans to incorporate elements of public and professional education within the memory screening program. Mile Bluff Medical Center and Mile Bluff Clinic, LLP strongly support this initiative and will begin utilizing the memory assessment clinic in late February. "Across Wisconsin, diagnostic clinics help families make informed decisions about their loved one as early as possible, when the greatest gains can be made," said Daniel Bader, president of the Helen Bader Foundation. "The foundation is pleased to help Mile Bluff Medical Center in bringing this important service to the Juneau County region." The memory assessment clinic is located in Mauston’s Mile Bluff Clinic.
